Book Review : ” Ellie McDoodle : Best Friends Fur-Ever ” by Ruth McNally Barshaw

Summary :
This is a story about a young girl named , Ellie McDoodle , who has a hard time picking an exotic animal for her project. This story all starts out when Ellie’s older brother , Josh , and her sister , Risa , play a prank on her . Ellie’s family has been arguing on what type of pet to get for them , for the past few days already . They all want different types of pets , her sister ( Risa ) wants a cat , her older brother ( Josh ) wants a dog , and etc. Her family has been mysteriously acting strange , they all have been talking in rhymes . The next day , in school , Ellie’s teacher , Mrs. Whittam , assigns the class a project . They all have to choose different exotic animals to research . After they choose their exotic animal , they have to study them and then do a multimedia presentation of the exotic animal . Just thinking of the presentation , made Ellie itch . She didn’t want to be laughed at , like when all of her classmates laughed at her in 2nd grade when she did a presentation . She had been brainstorming different exotic animals to do the project on for a couple of hours already . That same day , her neighbor , Mrs. Morrow , tells her that she needs someone to birdsit her African Gray Parrot , Alix , while she’s away . Ellie gladly offered to birdsit the parrot . She figured that while she’s birdsitting the parrot , she can get information on it for her presentation . She might also be able to take the bird to school with her , and let the bird do all the talking since it can talk . This would actually help her because then she won’t be afraid of getting laughed at . Things look like it’s all going to work out . But , unfortunately , one afternoon when she was taking care of the parrot , she noticed that it had flew out the window ! Ellie gets worried and feels horrible because she’s scared that it won’t come back . Ellie is trying everything to get the parrot back . You might have a lot of questions on your mind right now , … Will the parrot come back ? … Will she find the parrot before her neighbor gets home from the trip ? …

What I liked –

What I liked about this book was that it talks about a non-realistic story that happened to a young girl named Ellie McDoodle , but in reality we can also experience things like what Ellie McDoodle experienced . There’s just so many different events that happened in this non-realistic story that’s it’s actually very interesting .
What I disliked –
I really didn’t dislike anything about this story . I just think the author should’ve written this story more realistic and should’ve also written it with more shocking events or disasters .

Letter to Malala

Dear Malala ,

My name is Mariam . I am 11 years old . In my 6th grade Language Arts class , we read your book ( ” I Am Malala : How One Girl Stood Up for Education and Changed the World ” ) for about a couple of weeks . In the book , I read that you were shot by the Taliban for standing up for girls’ rights . It is just unbelievable how they can do such a thing to an amazing and beautiful girl like you . You are an incredibly brave and courageous young women . It is just magnificent how you stood up against the Taliban to promote the education and the rights of women . It was so heartbreaking when I read that you were shot just because you were against the Taliban . I really appreciate all the things you have done to fight for our rights . Your courage to stand against wrong is so impressive . At this young age , you have garnered more courage than most people can in their entire lives . Thank you , Malala Yousufzai , for risking your life for what is right , and for reminding us of what we need to do to make this world a better place with no violence at all .

What I disliked :

What I disliked about this novel was how the dog got abused by his owner , Judd Travers . And , how it didn’t really reveal much about how Judd felt .

One significant time in my life was when I got into the Leonettes Dance Team. The most important person in this time was my coach , Ms. Bryan. She helped me guide and influence my decisions. Ms. Bryan changed my life completely. Because of her , I have become a better dancer. Each and every day , Ms. Bryan has taught us Leonettes something new. She has inspired me everyday in becoming a better dancer. I am so glad to be part of an amazing group of girls that love me the way I am and an amazing coach that pushes us forward to succeed. Without Ms. Bryan in my life , I don’t know what I would have done. She has helped me so much , not only in dancing but in becoming a better person. Since I was little , I’ve always wanted to become part of a dance team , and Ms. Bryan made that dream come true. It has already been 6 months since I’ve been on this team and I have experienced so much. I hope to spend the rest of my middle school years in this team that has made my life 100 times better than it was.

Argumentative Essay

Good morning ladies and gentlemen. My name is Mariam and today I’m here to explain why I think exotic animals should be illegal. As well as , why people shouldn’t own them.

Do you know what exotic animals are ? If you don’t, exotic animals are animals that are wild and are unusually kept as pets. They live in nature and they are animals like : wolves, pythons, crocodiles, and bears. Some people want to make these animals illegal. Others claim that with proper care, these wild animals can safely live in captivity.

I believe that exotic animals should be illegal because they can be very dangerous. I say this because, in ” Wild Animals Aren’t Pets “, it states that about 5 people each year can be killed by these dangerous animals. For example, a 2-year-old Florida girl was strangled by a 12-foot-long Burmese python, a family pet that had gotten out of its aquarium.

Another reason I think exotic animals should not be pets is because they are wild. They do not adjust well to a captive environment. I say this because in, ” Keep Wildlife in the Wild”, it states that exotic animals do not make good companions. They require special care, housing, diet, and maintenance that the average person cannot provide.

Finally, the last reason I think exotic animals shouldn’t be pets is because of the disease transmission. I say this because in, ” Collateral Damage”, it states that zoonotic diseases can be transmitted between these animals and the people around them. They may be bacterial in nature, such as Salmonella, herpes B, etc. It is estimated that up to 90 percent of Macaque Monkeys carry the B virus, which may be shed in saliva.

In conclusion, I believe exotic animals should be illegal because of how dangerous they can be, how wild they can be, and because of their diseases risking a human’s health. Owning exotic animals is not illegal in most states, the only state it’s illegal in is Maryland. For the animals’ sake and for your health and safety, please do not buy exotic animals as pets. Thank you and have a great day !

Book Report: “Henry and Beezus “

Summary:

This story is about a boy named Henry Huggins and his friend, Beezus Quimby. He really wants a bike but his parents can’t afford one for him. So, Henry is trying to find ways to earn money to get the bike. Henry’s best friends are Robert and Beezus, they try to help him all through the story to afford the bike he wants. One day, Henry finds boxes of gum on a bush in a field. His first idea to earn money was……to sell the gum to his classmates and friends. He gets in a lot of trouble because of this. His next idea, was to help Scooter ( a boy that lives in his neighborhood ) with his newspaper route while he is at Scout Camp. But before he helped him, Henry found out about an auction for bikes at the police station. When he was there, he was able to get a bike but it was a girl’s bike and it was all bent and did not work well. After this, there was a new Colossal Market opening, him and his parents went to the grand opening and there were door prizes. Henry won a door prize, but it was for coupons to the salon for haircuts, perms and false eye lashes. Everyone in there were laughing because this was a prize for a girl, not a boy. At one moment, the kids were daring Henry to eat the dog food samples and Henry thought if he did this they would stop making fun of the prize he won. Henry ate the dog food, but everyone was still making fun of him for the prize and now for eating dog food. Beezus asked Henry if she could buy one of the coupons from him for $1.05.  After this, Scooter’s mother bought one, Henry’s mother bought one and soon, he had sold all the coupons. Henry had gotten already $50 for all his coupons. But, he still needed $9.95 to buy the red bike he saw at Rose City Bike and Trike store.  Henry’s dad said he would give him $10.  So, finally Henry got the red bike he had always wanted.

What I liked :

I liked this story because the story was really interesting. It was interesting  because it had a lot of different things that could happen in real life.

What I disliked:

What I disliked about it was how they put Beezus as an important character in the story and in the title ( “Henry and Beezus” ) but, the only thing she did was buy a coupon from Henry. So, I don’t really get why they put her as important character.

I give this book a 4 star rating because I feel like both boys and girls would like this story because it has both a boy, Henry, and a girl, Beezus, as the main characters.
